Change is inevitable, except from vending machines.
In hockey, crap happens. When it does, somebody’s usually sent packing. In the “Waiting for Hockey” season, Flyers management shuffled away a couple of big someones: Mike Richards and Jeff Carter.
These guys were in my hockey harem in past seasons. Former captain. Former leading scorer. What more could a fan girl ask for?
Uh, not getting sacked by the Bruins in the playoffs would have been grand.
Tonight, the new season enters its crystal-ball phase after a few other interesting changes during the long summer.
- Chris Pronger is the new captain. Big surprise there. I think if they could have pasted the C on his jersey last season, management would have.
- We acquired a couple of Penguins of varying vintages. Jaromir Jagr is back in the NHL. Maxime Talbot transferred from Iron City to the City of Brotherly Love. Who else is looking forward to Battle of Pennsylvania games this season? 😉
- Ilya Bryzgalov was brought in to shepherd Sergei Bobrovsky in the Jedi ways of being an NHL Starting Goaltender.
All of this is to say that I’m having a hard time pegging exactly what to expect from the 2011-2012 Flyers. Will goaltending finally be as solid as we need it to be? Is the D strong enough to sufficiently discourage visitors in our zone? What will the juggling on the front line bring to the equation?
Shake down time started tonight with preseason game 1 against the Leafs. As many of the questions as possible need to be sorted out between now and October 6, when pucks drop all across the U.S.A. and Canada for the regular season.
(By the way, we won tonight’s game 4-0 over the Leafs.)
See you on the Interwebs,
